Lincolnshire Weekend 19th - 22nd May

This weekend bought myself and cycling buddies Bob, Paul and Tim to Horncastle in Lincolnshire for a 3 night cycling break.

We only managed 15 miles on Fri 19th due to rain delaying our afternoon/evening local ride out.

On 20th May we did a shortened version of the Tour of the Wolds sportive route, it was a really nice route and for most part a nice sunny day. We stopped at wotsit tea rooms for a mid ride break which turned out to be a nice establishment. The second half of the ride dumped heavy rain on us for ten minutes x 3 and then it went really nice and sunny immediately afterward. Weird weather indeed! Hope to do this route again next yr.

21st of May saw us riding out to Sutton on Sea and back, we did this route last year and I had forgotten how flat it was once you got over the lump in the middle. Had one of the best cake/puddins ever at the Fat Seagull Cafe - a chocolate and waffle cheesecake yum!

A grand weekend away with a total of 131 miles ridden.

Stoneleigh Park

Today I got up later than planned (nothing new there then!) and decided test a new route I had recently created and pay an inaugural visit to Stoneleigh Park, forcast was 17 deg and sunny... it wasn't wrong however when I left at 11.15am it looked like it would rain, after the first hour and a few spots of rain the clouds brightened and the sun started shining. :)

The route was fairly flat with a few long leg sappers as I got closer, a few impatient drivers around Kenilworth way, explored a nice walking path and bridge over an A road along the way.

Unfortunately Stoneleigh is situated on a B road which wasn't great to ride with cars zooming past at 50mph+ so the last mile in and out was a bit crap.

I had forgotten my lock however Stoneleigh Park Cafe had plenty of tables and benches outside so potential issue solved. Inside it was full of people eating Sunday dinner, there were a few people waiting in a queue with trays so I bypassed them and headed straight to the counter (wasn't sure of the protocol really)  On the counter I found a choice of 2 cakes, chocolate cake and blueberry cake (I hadn't spotted the flapjacks etc in a cabinate untill I walked out d'oh!) I Chose the blueberry cake, it was pre cut and was hoping to be served the bigger slice... I wasn't tut! I should have probably picked up a tray also as was served my tea and cake in a takaway cup and tray. The tea was in a large cup and the cake was rather... small. (I probably should have chose chocolate cake as it wasn't pre cut).
I was charged £5.05 wow!!

Once I got away from the B road on the return leg the roads were once more as pleasent as the route in, almost witnessed a car crash (at crossroads) however some nifty breaking at the last minute saved the day, I seriously thought there was going to be a collision! The route soon returned to familiarity near Hatton and returned home via Lowsenford and Earlswood.

A very pleasent ride out dispite a few negatives along the way, some nice new roads but a route more suited to midweek riding rather than weekend, the prices charged have put me off returning too soon though...

56 miles covered.

1 x Belvita choc chip soft baked
1 x slice Blueberry cake (small slice  = booo!)

Cobhouse & Churchfields

Had been a bit unwell most of yesterday and had sat on my backside all day (no gym and no kayaking boo!). Today I woke up later than planned but feeling good and fresh, drew back the curtains to find sunshine!! Started riding at 10.30ish and decided to head over to Barnt Green and then decide where to go. The legs and weather felt good I embarked on a 75 mile ride to the Cobhouse and Churchfields.

At Barnt Green there were people setting up for Barnt Green Fun Run, it was obviously the finish line and noticed the time said midday on the poster... 'ah good I won't run into any of them then' thinks I... wrong! about 5 miles later I found myself dawdling down a road behind loads of runners... and then they turned left down the road where I was heading nooooo!! Decided not to turn left and rerouted onto a B road, it wasn't too bad - not much traffic.

As I got closer to the Cobhouse the Malverns appeared in the distance over my left shoulder.

Arrived at the Cobhouse at mile 35ish, as it was sunny I was expecting it to be packed and I wasn't wrong, I breifly joined the end of the longish queue to find the person infront of me took the last empty tray so I gave up and decided to just eat my banana and cashew butter sarnie instead. after eating half of it I looked through the window to find the queue had vanished so headed back inside. Found 1 empty tray had been put out so nabbed it. (come on staff chop chop!!) There was home baked apple pie and some flan thing in the chilled cabinet but learning from previous experience (stale home cooked cakes) I opted for a slice of lardy cake in a celophane packet - turned out to be delish!

Left the Cobhouse and headed to Worcester with the Malverns in the distance over my right shoulder, there is a pretty little offroady bit along the way into Worcester. As I crossed  over Worcester bridge a number of boats from Worcester Sailing club were on the water.

At around 3.45 I arrived at Churchfields and decided to try their ice cream, as expected the place was rammed with parents and kids. I could see the queue out the door in the main building however, in the garden they had an ice cream van that had no queue at all! I almost chose the cherry and marshmallow flavour but couldn't resist cookie and ice cream flavour - turned out to be an excellent choice and one of the best ice creams I have ever had yum!

Big signs not long after I left Churchfields, ROAD CLOSED... we'll see about that, luckily I found I could dismount and weave my way through - diverting would have meant returning from whence I came and woulda been a massive pain in the ass.

From 4 onwards the afternoon sun became a bit intense for me and could have done with disappearing for a bit, or maybe this lazy cow shoulda dragged her ass outta bed earlier? 😳

Rolled in at 7pm, 76 miles covered.

Today's Fuel:
3 Gels
1 cashew butter and banana sandwich on brown bread
1 lardy cake

Auntea Ritas

Woke up around 8.30am looked out the window to find... sunshine yayness!
However... dozed for another hour as hadn't slept much, was ready and out the door at 10.30ish.
Couldnt decide wether to go to the Boat Shack or try out Aunte Rita's... the Boat Shack at Upton Warren has a nice balcony infront of a kayaking/boating lake, ideal for sunshine but... as I hadn't been to Rita's before I chose to go there instead.

The ride down was nice enough however, I came across a road closure on Cur Lane, surface dressing... yes that's right, those shitty stone chips they cheaply throw over the top of the road and then just leave for traffic to roll over and bed in... total crap road surface for weeks on end with stone chips flying everywhere! At that point I knew I would likely come across closed roads again on the way back and kinda wished I'd have chose the Boat Shack instead.

Apart from that it was a fairly quiet and traffic fee route down to Rita's, the route included crossing two fords, one of which I had never crossed over before, it had a lovely little offroad trail over the bridge.

I arrived at Rita's to find only one small wooden table with 2 chairs and one round glass table with a couple of retired geezers having lunch. Very mismatched and sparse frontage considering the amount of space there is, I didn't find the frontage too inviting really - definately missing a trick there! Inside it is good, a very twee English tea shop kinda thing with cups and saucers and doilleys etc. Couldn't fault the service, only a choice of two cakes though, I gave my order (tea and cake £4.50) and I sat at the small table outside, about 5 minutes later my order arrived, a pot of tea for one (complete with real tea leaves and teacup strainer oooh!) and an ample slice of Victoria Sponge. The Cake was very nice and home made, the tea however wasn't too hot, by the time I poured my second cup it was just warm. Had a mini chat with the geezers on the other table, I had my Wiggle finishers t shirt on and they asked if I had taken part in last years televised Wiggle Honda cycling race haha! 😁

Cafe verdict = Nice enough place but I wouldn't go mad about it, 6.5/10

The sun was really shining on the return trip, as suspected I came across the road closure on the way back and had to detour onto a busy looking B road near Redditch, luckily it was only 10 minutes before I rejoined my route again and the traffic was fairly quiet at that time.

Todays Fuel:
2 x toast, 1 topped with nutella and the other with jam. (Pre ride brekkie)
4 x fig rolls
1 slice of Victoria Sponge
1 x nutella on 1 x white bread
1 Hi5 gel
1 ltr SIS Go Electrolite energy/water mix
